Our Retirees

Our retired racehorses arrive at Down the Stretch Ranch from various thoroughbred trainers in California and Washington, as well as through CARMA in California. The ranch is not necessarily a rescue, as the horses arrive in good condition, but they have injuries or issues that prevent them from racing.

Upon arrival, each horse is evaluated and given individualized care based on its needs. They are allowed time to adjust to their new environment and prepare for the next stage of their lives. Some horses remain at the ranch as sanctuary residents due to age or the severity of their injuries, while younger horses are given time to recover before being adopted by qualified horsemen and women.

Over the past 10 years, the ranch has cared for more than 100 horses and is currently home to 32. The adoption process is essential to the ranch’s mission, ensuring that rehabilitated horses find suitable homes and making space for new horses in need.
